Get the Right Keywords

When you do a little research on improving your website’s ranking, you’ll notice that many webmasters often mention keyword optimization. Although it sounds simple enough, knowing the right keywords for your site can be challenging – especially since you can come up with literally hundreds of keyword combinations.

Accuracy and research has a lot to do with finding the perfect keyphrases for your website. Site visitors do not necessarily become your customers, particularly if your website is not what they are looking for. This is what is known as untargeted traffic. While it may not necessarily be a bad thing, you have better use of your web presence and bandwidth.

When you think of your keywords, it’s important to think about your target audience and the fact that their needs often come in the form of questions. For example, “Where do I get a cheap student loan?” or “Are there any tour packages available in Morocco?” When you think in terms of your potential customer’s questions, you’ve narrowed down your potential keyphrases. Given in the previous examples, instead of using the keywords “student loan” maybe you would like to use “cheap student loan” or “get cheap student loan”.

Most searches on the net have a sense of urgency. Customers demand things to be fast, speedy, or quick. Perhaps you would like to add these words and their synonyms as part of your keyphrases. Customers also tend to look for easy and convenient solutions. Phrases like “no hassle”, “automatic”, and “instant” may also prove to be useful on your behalf.

Now that you know how to include generalized phrasing in your keywords, you should look into the specifics. There is a common misconception that using obvious and popular keywords are the way to go. This isn’t an advisable move, especially if your website is relatively new compared to your competitors. The more popular a search term is, the more competitors you have for that phrase. It’s best to be knowledgeable in the jargon of the industry category your website is in and to find key phrases from words that aren’t as popular as the number 1 search term. While listing the most used search term won’t have negative effects, you’ll have better results with the less common terms. There are several keyword tool selectors available online that may help you with your search for the ideal keyphrases. Pay attention to the way these keyphrases are worded, as well as common spelling mistakes and equivalent terms in other languages. Keep in mind that although you can use several keyphrases, some search engines may label you as a “keyword spammer” if you use too much.

When you’ve made informed decisions on what keywords to use for your site, you have to put them in the best places in order for the search engines to find them. While putting them in the META tag is obvious, it is also not as effective. Try putting them in your webpage titles, as well as your site headers (the <h1> <h2> tags) and your alt tags. Hopefully, by the time you’re done with your website’s keyword optimization, you’ll get the results you want.
