Reseller Web Hosting: Benefits and Drawbacks

Reseller Hosting can be termed as subdivision of webhosting where divisions of web resources move down the line. In this type of hosting an order consisting of a bulk plan is taken from a company i.e. from the web host and thereafter this bulk is then divided among individual users who demand the web resources. Here the term ‘resell’ is self explanatory as we can see that in this case the operation is sort of work which is done by wholsalers who buy bulk from the company and then distribute it as retailers.

These reseller hosts do not cater to the needs of the individual customers but rather packages on a large scale basis. These packages are available for fixed cost for the web host who also get the chance to host domain names on a bulk basis along with other facilities like bandwidth and large spaces. Thus in this case the (reseller) web hosts are saved from the problems of maintaining the server.

But it should be seen here that, as in all cases this service also comes with benefits and drawbacks both. Apart from professional web hosts it is highly useful for people who are engaged in the operation of multiple domain names. eg. Large companies which have to have many websites for different products or large business houses.

Becoming a reseller is one the most viable options among online businesses because in this case the business has to incur minimum start up cost. By becoming a reseller a person with low resources can create and maintain a small business which can be highly profitable in the future. A high possibility of additional income generation is also possible in the case of resellers. If we count on to the benefits of being a reseller apart from above visible advantages we can very well come up with positive results in many areas.

Firstly, through this type of operation the reseller gets an increase in the flexibility of his web hosting accounts. This means wider operating area. Another important thing is the low cost which the reseller has to incur. It is one of the best areas where a person can invest in the online business. The savings come from all aspects i.e. initial cost, maintenance cost, etc. If we consider maintenance cost then it can be seen that the problem of maintaining the server is of the original hosting company which sells large packages. The concern for the reseller host is just the customers and all concerns regarding technical support is of the reseller host. Greater revenue can be earned by a reseller by
providing additional services which again does not require an initial cost.

Now, let’s consider the other side of the coin…. This option comes with certain disadvantages also. The hosts here are completely relying on the upstream provider who ultimately owns the server. Any problems in the server have to be also borne by the resellers. Once the reseller buys a particular package and the service goes down frequently then he may get bad name among the ultimate clients which is highly unacceptable. Also if there is a change in the DNS (in case host has to be changed) then it will be highly inconvenient for the all the individual sites under the reseller.

Further more, once you have exhausted your quota of disk space or bandwidth among the clients then it is not immediately possible to increase the space or bandwidth for any other site which again will lead to the possible loss of the client.

Thus, here we can see that independence of the operations is not possible which can lead to loss of clients in the long run.
